PDA Sales Will Surpass 50 Millions Units in 2006

Buffalo Grove IL, September 9, 2001-
The PDA market will continue to grow strongly in the U.S. and worldwide. U.S. sales surpassed 5.5M units in 2000 and will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 21% in the next six years and will surpass 17M units in 2006. PDA sales growth will be even higher in Asia-Pacific as this region has a CAGR of nearly 30% and reaches 14.5M units in 2006. The PDA growth rates have declined in 2001 as the current economic slow down has impacted U.S. and worldwide sales. U.S. PDA sales will only grow 20-27% in 2001 depending on the depth of the current high-tech recession..

The U.S. PDAs in-use surpassed 12M units in 2000 and will zoom to over 68M by year-end 2006 for a compound annual growth rate of 33%. The worldwide number of PDAs in-use topped 24M units in 2000 and will grow at a compound annual rate of over 40% to reach over 186M units in 2006.

“The PDA market is still being led by Palm-compatible devices, but Pocket PC devices have gained market share in the U.S. and especially in Europe, says Dr. Egil Juliussen, the author of the report. “Linux-based PDAs and Symbian-based PDA-Phones are also in contention. If the PDA-Phone market takes off, these projections are conservative.”
